While at steelcase,
I have had the opportunity to contribute to a number of projects. As they are released, I will talk about my involvement here.
I came in late in the development of the FLEX collection and had a small role in the development of details- quite small.
Namely, I had the role of designing the handle and some elements of the frame for the Acoustic Boundary.
About one third of the PET and plywood models made as exploration for the handle
Iterations took into consideration every phase of the existing manufacture process including heat pressing, CNC machining, and sewing.
The final handle uses a tension fit of the outer PET cover to hold a small insert against the plywood frame.
This is a neat solution that adds negligible costs in machine time; CNC of the plywood perimeter and an oscillating CNC knife for the PET; and none in materials.
